Eddie’s Comment. I was not surprised how unwell I became considering the week of hard work in the bush and having the Flu of course as previously mentioned. We motored along at the correct pace for our run but for me the warning signs were there on my Heart Rate monitor 4mins into the run. My heart rate was elevated as it had been all week but now running as expected it would be too high to sustain a decent pace. I soldiered on with Cath and after I missed the start by a few mins due to my food being left in the car. We slowly caught the main middle group at Peppers Guest House. Anyway I said to Cath I will have to drink every aid station due to the general sickly dehydrated state the Flu gives you. We did the first lap in 1hr 48mins and I knew that this was near the end of this pace for me. I said to Cath the time will come when you have to just go power on and I know my way home so I will be okay no monsters or Bunyips out here. I found it hard with cramps and knew I would cease and lock up so I had to walk hills then jog cautiously down them. I totally locked up 200m before the finish a
nd had to lie on the ground and get some officials to massage my legs. I got up jogged gently toward the finish Shute and locked up again holding myself up on a fence. A Japanese family was saying we help we help stay there. I said SHHHHH, I will be okay. I stretched and friends Kath, Vanessa and Cath came up and gave me some support and rubbed my calves and then down I went to the Shute. They were going to carry me and it would have been okay, they are all really pretty. I was very sick now. So I made the next 40 yards to the finish and the crowd lifted me and had a high five for everyone and I hugged Cath and her man Jase and thanked them for their support and her mum too. I had a cry and Cath started too as well she told me later. An emotional day for me and an achievement. I would have let myself and others down if I had of pulled out at 26 kms equally I would have let everyone down as well if I didn’t be smart enough to slow down and manage myself to make the finish. DNF was never an option. Honestly this day was harder on me because of the Flu than my May 18th Ultra day of 8hrs and 3mins Ride and run. Thanks Janelle for driving me home in the Leapfrog car, I hope James didn’t drive yours too fast. Pic by James.
