Swim
6 am swim start. Amazing sunrise, flat conditions. I was joined by about 50 supportive friends and crew for the start of my 14 Hour Day. On the swim, we saw beautiful fish including groper and bream. Nobby’s Reef and Nobby’s Spitt
and sand shoals were amazing, too.
The Water Safety Crew was led by Lifeguard Adam Metcalf and consisted of fellow Newcastle Surf Club members.
We saw people on the Breakwater cheering and waving to us. Conditions were good so we were ahead of time. We even had time to get out at Horseshoe Beach for a chat.
When we entered the harbour, the water was more murky, unclear, and I got to swim with two great Olympians - Justin Norris and John Konrads.
At the end of the swim, we got out at Queens Wharf Brewery at 8.15am. There were plenty of people to meet us and cheer us on for the next leg where I ran up to Customs House and back to Forum Harbourside with State MP Jodi McKay. We chatted about how our lives have changed over the last two years.
Spin Class-Forum Harbourside
The first spin class of the day had over 40 people in it. Instructor, Tony Cleava had balloons and
streamers everywhere for a carnival atmosphere. He had even changed the words of Bill Idol’s song ‘Rebel Yell’. Instead of ‘more, more, more’, we sang out ‘Eddie, Eddie, Eddie’.
Bike
The first bike leg was with my childhood mate, Steve Cavs, Steve Wags and Vanessa to Westfield Kotara. Vanessa swam the whole swim leg with me and
was a little tired. Steve was very, very tired and needed the rest of the day to recover.
Spin Class-Westfield
Kotara
We did a great one hour spin bike class, led by instructor Natalie. Plenty of shoppers passed by to donate or to cheer us on.
Bike
I then left Westfield and rode to Rebel Sport Charlestown with Kate where Store Manager, Craig Booth, gave us Powerade and GU gels.
We then rode back to Forum Harbourside, clocking 67.5km/h
down Scenic Drive, cheered on by the film crew, Melanie and my daughters Sarah and Chelsea.
I changed bikes then to my time trial bike for the next leg. Theo (Leap Frog) and Brett and Grant (Lake Macquarie Private Hospital) joined me for the ride to Beresfield. Theo and I then surged on at a greater speed to Ted’s Bike Shop at Greenhills. Grant and Brett got a lift in the support wagon.
At Ted’s Bike Shop, I made a very hasty toilet stop before continuing on alone. I rode past Maitland to The Bradford Hotel
at Rutherford, where coach, Ben Higginbottom, instructed me to have a quarter of a sausage from the BBQ with a bun. I then proceeded back to Rutherford where Kev Wilcher, from Rutherford-Telarah Rotary, waved us over and gave us a cheque for $500. I was overwhelmed and cried at this point.
Spin Class-Genesis Fitness Centre, Maitland
I then rode over the Long Bridge into Maitland for the next spin cycle class. This was held at Genesis Fitness Centre. While we participated in another spin class, the crew had a chance to have a quick lunch break. For this class, I
was joined by daughters and my mum, Mildred.
Bike
I then rode to Morpeth Oval where I was joined by 8 very good cyclist friends, including good friend, Marek, who I picked up along the way at Tenambit for the peloton leg. We rode to Raymond Terrace and then on to Tomago. The peloton was organised and led by World Champion and Olympic Cyclist, Oenone Wood, as I was very exhausted and somewhat incoherent at times along this leg. Thanks go to Raymond Terrace Police who blocked the Heatherbrae roundabout for us to pass through it uninterrupted.
At Tomago, the peloton finished and then Troupie and Simon blasted back into the Forum Harbourside with me. At one stage, we slipped back off the slipstream of our pace car and Troupie, doing 52 km/h with me on his wheel, managed to get back into the slipstream. Gee, this hurt.
Run
At Harbourside, I was joined by a group of 10 runners. We started the 30 km run leg, which I had to cut short to
25 km as I was a bit unfab. Everyone pitched in to support me, realising my predicament. Melanie and my girls, in her car, the fab Yaris, followed us for the entire run leg. This kept me somewhat alert and encouraged me to jog more instead of walk. Cathy Rose, my long time run training partner and Detective Sergeant, decided to do her duty as
traffic controller and body guard along the route through city café streets and King Edward Park. I high-fived the waiter at Lotus Café who saw the film crew and thought we were celebrities. The other
highlight for me was where, at the end of the run, I saw KFC and kissed the building, much to the amusement of a family of four inside.
Spin Class-Forum Harbourside
We arrived back at the Forum Harbourside for the 6.24pm spin cycle class. I was very tired and numb at this stage, as were my support crew. However, instructor, Tony Cleava managed to excite the whole class again with his drive. My daughters, Sarah and Chelsea were again part of this class.
Run
At 7.24pm, Cathy, Melanie, Sarah, Chelsea and I jogged to Number One Sportsground. There, my daughters and I joined my old AFL team for a lap of the oval where I acquired my brain injury in May 2006. It was an emotional time for my girls and I to return, together, to that place. I also spent time with my AFL coach, Stubbsy, and Tim Callcott, my Event Manager before my children and I made own way to Panthers.
At Panthers, I was met by an overwhelming reception of over 300 well-wishing people. I had a quick massage and shower before joining the After Party.
